Portrait of Sue Studd, artisan silver jewellery maker and founder of The Magic of Fireflies and Dragonflies, wearing a handmade silver necklace.

About Sue – Artist, Designer, Maker

From the moment I was old enough to hold a paintbrush, I was drawn to the world of art and creativity. Encouraged by my parents, I spent much of my childhood experimenting with colour, design, and craft, from painting to sewing, knitting, and crocheting.

That early love of making things with my hands became the foundation of everything I do today.

After training as a primary school teacher in London, I spent many years teaching across a wide range of subjects, always with a strong focus on art and design. I served as the art co-ordinator in most of the schools where I taught, encouraging children to explore their creativity, embrace new techniques, and find confidence in self-expression.

Teaching gave me a deep appreciation for patience, detail, and storytelling, qualities that continue to inspire my work as an artist today.

When I took early retirement, I moved with my husband and our beloved dogs to Suffolk. It was here, surrounded by the countryside and the beauty of the natural world, that my creative journey evolved into something new. I discovered silver clay, a medium that captured my imagination with its unique alchemy of transformation.

Silver clay, made from recycled and eco-friendly materials, turns into 99.9% fine silver when fired. Its magic lies in the way it allows me to bring tiny details from nature to life: the veins of a leaf, the wings of a dragonfly, or the delicate form of a wildflower.

I trained intensively in this craft, becoming a qualified Precious Metal Clay instructor in 2020 and achieving two internationally recognised Art Clay Diplomas (Levels 1 & 2) in 2022. These qualifications not only deepened my skills as a jeweller but also enabled me to pass on my knowledge.

Today, I run silver clay workshops from my home in Suffolk . My workshops are designed to be welcoming, encouraging, and hands-on, giving you the chance to explore your creativity and take home a unique piece of handmade jewellery crafted by your own hands.

Every piece of jewellery I create is completely unique. Handmade from eco-conscious fine silver, my designs are inspired by the natural world around me — woodland leaves, wildflowers, moths, dragonflies, shells, stars, and celestial symbols. I see jewellery as a way to carry a story or a memory. Each pendant, necklace, or pair of earrings becomes a talisman: a connection to nature, a personal reminder of transformation, or a meaningful gift for someone special.

My passion lies in creating one-of-a-kind handmade silver jewellery that feels deeply personal. Whether you are searching for a statement necklace, a symbolic pendant, or a thoughtful gift, my pieces are designed to hold meaning as well as beauty. No two designs are ever the same — each one carries its own story, its own inspiration, and its own touch of magic.

Moving from teaching to jewellery making has felt like a natural evolution of my lifelong love of art. Where once I nurtured creativity in classrooms, I now pour that same passion into creating and teaching through jewellery. My work is a celebration of the beauty of nature and the joy of handmade craftsmanship. Meaningful Heirloom Pieces that can be worn and cherished.
