Sue’s sunflowers celebrate the way these happy flowers turn their faces towards the sun. She builds the blooms from textured yellow fabrics, including an unexpected material: a plastic net bag that once held daffodil bulbs. Its open texture adds a distinctive surface among the layered petals.

The sunflowers sit against painted blue silk, giving the bright yellows a cool, contrasting background. This original sunflower textile artwork brings together colour, reuse and Sue’s playful approach to materials. Look closely at the petals to see how different textures help give the flowers their character and movement.

The largest sunflower commands attention: its petals are formed from torn and frayed strips of golden, amber, and burnt orange fabric, radiating outward in every direction. At its centre sits a tightly coiled spiral of dark thread — deep navy and black — with a subtle shimmer running through it. Green fabric leaves curl naturally at the stem. A second sunflower echoes the same warmth, slightly smaller and turned, while a third bud peeks in from below, all set against a blue-grey textile background with fine horizontal stitching running across it like a summer sky.
