A row of looping teal cord crests the surface of this extraordinary piece like waves breaking at the shore — each one formed from thick twisted turquoise cord, filled with fine silver mesh, and crowned with a delicate arc of pearl and crystal beads. Sue’s love of the sea, and her particular connection to blue, comes through in this textured wave-inspired textile artwork.
An engraved metal tube is stitched along the bottom, with small silver pieces placed near the top. These distinctive details draw the eye across the piece and add another layer to the mix of fabric and metal. A striking work of original coastal textile art that reflects Sue’s enduring fascination with the sea.
The composition sweeps horizontally across the frame in flowing bands of teal, aquamarine, navy and silver-grey. The upper section is a rich, quilted teal fabric alive with fine silver thread embroidery and scattered pearl beads. Below the cord, layers of blue and teal mesh and organza tumble over one another like breaking waves, shifting from bright turquoise through deep navy to a cooler blue-grey. At the base, a band of silver-grey textured fabric, grounding the piece like a rocky shoreline beneath the sea.
